Greek Yogurt Chicken Salad
I have an inner desire to be a southern beauty. This call has come up several times here, always when I share a recipe that reminds me of the south and my college friends in the area. Today’s Greek Yogurt Chicken Salad is one of those recipes. I can’t get enough of eating it. It’s healthy, creamy, super filling, and perfect for salads and sandwiches. It would probably also horrify my friend from Alabama.
This healthy chicken salad recipe no mayo. I KNOW. I can hear my sweet girlfriend from ******, who is fond of chicken salad, gasping in horror. In fact, she is too distinguished for such a gesture. I’m sure she has a very polite and socially appropriate sound effect for a chicken salad recipe without mayo, which she considers an essential condiment for creamy salads of all kinds. If I find out what it is, I’ll report it.
Although I pride myself on not being a picky eater, mayonnaise is a food that I have never enjoyed. When I was little, my mom couldn’t even spread it on my sister’s sandwich and then use the same knife to cut mine in half without me detecting the commission. Since tastes can change over time, I have tried it several times over the years to “check-in” to make sure I still don’t like and NOPE. No mayonnaise for this girl.
Fortunately, Greek yoghurt gave me a chance to try recipes that traditionally call for mayo, like chicken salad, in a delicious and even healthy way. Greek yoghurt is creamy and thick like mayonnaise, but with a rich, tangy taste, mayonnaise is missing. In most recipes, including chicken salad, Greek yoghurt behaves exactly like mayonnaise, making it a perfect substitute.
As a bonus, Greek yoghurt is incredibly healthy too. We are talking about protein, calcium, and rich vitamins, all with little or no fat. I’m clearly a fan.
And I’m also a huge fan of Greek Yogurt Chicken Salad.
Chicken salad is one of those recipes that I sometimes forget, and then once I make it again, I wonder why I don’t add it to my menu every week. It’s easy, healthy, and ready to adapt.
I have experimented with many healthy chicken salad flavour profiles (curried greek yogurt chicken salad; mustard greek yogurt chicken salad; fruitless greek yogurt chicken salad with fruit), and I can conclusively state That while everyone has their place, today’s Chicken Salad with Greek Yogurt and Dill, along with other flavorful mixes, is my favourite.
This chicken salad recipe is also incredibly easy. Once the ingredients are ready, all you need to do is mix them and ta-da! A full bowl of whole healthy chicken salad. Fruits, veggies, protein, and dairy – the food group gang is here.
You can make a large bowl in the morning and then leave it for lunch, along with bread or croissants for customers to serve themselves sandwiches, something Ben’s family often does on long summer days by the lake.
I also like to make a plate of chicken salad for lunch during the week. I keep it in the fridge and enjoy it on green salads or stacked on a slice of toasted multigrain bread for quick, healthy breakfasts.

Greek Yogurt Chicken Salad
Lean Greek Yogurt Chicken Salad with Dill, Raisins, Celery, and Almonds. A simple and healthy version of the classic chicken salad. Creamy, fresh and crunchy!

- 3 cups boneless, cooked, skinless chicken breasts (about 1 ¼ pounds or 3 small / medium breasts), cut into ½-inch dice
- 2 cups red seedless grapes, cut in half
- 3 medium celery stalks, diced (only 1 ½ cups)
- 2 large green onions or 3 small / medium green onions, thinly sliced (about ¼ cup)
½ cup flaked or flaked almonds, toasted
- 1 cup fat-free plain Greek yogurt
- 2 tablespoons skim milk
- 2 teaspoons of honey
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt plus extra to taste
- ½ teaspoon black pepper and more to taste
- 2 tablespoons minced fresh dill
- Accompaniment: whole wheat bread croissants, lettuce leaves, crackers
- Place the diced chicken, raisins, celery, scallions, and almonds in a large bowl. In another bowl, mix together the Greek yoghurt, milk, honey, salt, and pepper. Pour over the chicken mixture and toss to coat. Taste and add additional salt and pepper if desired. If time allows, refrigerate 2 hours or overnight.
- When ready to serve, sprinkle with fresh dill. Serve as a garnish for sandwiches, on green salads, as a dip with crackers, or just enjoy in the bowl.
Leftover chicken salad will keep in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
