Using an Instant Pot to cook a frozen chicken is possible and practical. A general example of how to do it is as follows:

Ingredients

Scale
  • Whole, frozen chicken.
  • Your preferred seasonings (salt, pepper, herbs, spices).
  • 1 cup of water, chicken broth, or any cooking liquid.

Instructions

Safety Guide:

To avoid cross-contamination, ensure your frozen whole chicken is in a sealed plastic bag. This will aid in fitting it into the Instant Pot as well.

Chicken preparation:

Remove the chicken from any plastic packaging if it is present. To remove any ice that might be adhered to the surface, quickly wash the chicken under cold water.

Chicken with seasoning:

Using your preferred seasonings, rub the chicken. Use whatever combination of salt, pepper, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and any herbs and spices you like.

Using an Instant Pot:

Fill the Instant Pot with roughly 1 cup of water, chicken broth, or another cooking liquid. The chicken won’t stick to the pot due to the steam created by doing this.

Trivet:

Put the metal trivet (included with the Instant Pot) inside. This will make the chicken slightly elevated and away from the cooking liquid.

Toss in the chicken:

Onto the trivet, put the seasoned frozen chicken. To ensure uniform cooking, arrange the chicken so it isn’t too tightly packed.

Shut the Lid:

Please ensure the vent is in the sealing position, fasten the Instant Pot cover, and secure it.

Cooking Period:

Generally, cook the frozen whole chicken for 6 to 8 minutes per pound on the “Manual” or “Pressure Cook” mode. Therefore, you might cook a 5-pound chicken for 30 to 40 minutes. However, as cooking times might differ depending on the size and type of chicken, it’s recommended to refer to the manual that came with your Instant Pot for instructions.

Cooking Method:

Because the chicken is frozen, the Instant Pot will take some time to reach pressure. The time you specified for cooking will start once it achieves pressure.

Natural Release:

Allow the Instant Pot to naturally release pressure 10 to 15 minutes after the cooking cycle. To release any pressure that may still be present, carefully turn the vent to the “Venting” position.

Internal Temperature Check:

To determine the chicken’s inside temperature, use a meat thermometer. The thickest section of the meat needs to be at least 165°F (74°C) in temperature.

Resting:

Several minutes should pass before carving and serving the chicken.

Just keep in mind that depending on your particular Instant Pot model and the size of the chicken, cooking times may vary. Always put safety first, and check the internal temperature of the chicken with a meat thermometer.
